Water is one of the most important reagents in many laboratories including life science research, diagnostics, molecular biology, and IVF. Trace amounts of contaminants – ions, organic molecules, bacteria, RNases, DNases and endotoxins – can impact experimental results, destroy cell cultures, or kill embryos.
The Purite Fusion lab water purification system was created with one purpose in mind – to provide reliable, high‑quality water for the exacting needs of today’s laboratory workflows. It does more than generate purified water. It produces two levels of lab water quality: Type II and ultrapure Type I. It also integrates advanced purification technologies to ensure molecular-grade water safety. Let’s take a closer look inside the Purite Fusion and trace the path of water through every treatment stage.
Step 1: Carbon Pre‑Treatment – Protecting the System from the Start
Feedwater from mains supply usually has chlorine, chloramines and all sorts of organic molecules. They can damage RO membranes and cause contaminants that pollute the quality downstream.
The Purite Fusion’s carbon pre‑treatment stage absorbs and neutralises these oxidants. This is the system’s first line of defence, as it protects internal components and extends their life, ensuring that downstream processes receive a stable feedwater.
Step 2: Reverse Osmosis – Bulk Contaminant Removal
Reverse osmosis is the backbone of any water purification system. Using a semi‑permeable membrane, it removes 95 – 99% of dissolved salts, heavy metals, and large organic compounds. The Purite Fusion’s RO stage dramatically reduces feed water conductivity, lowering the load on ion-exchange resins used later in the process.
For labs, this means a more consistent baseline quality and less frequent replacement of downstream consumables. The result: reduced operational costs, with improved reliability.
Step 3: Ion Exchange Deionisation – Achieving Ultrapure Standards
After RO, the PP cartridge converts the water to type 2. Several competitors feed their tanks with RO or EDI water rather than Type 2 water as in Purite Fusion. The Purite Fusion contains a mixed‑bed ion‑exchange resin to polish the water of these residual ionic species and provide resistivity values of up to 18.2 MΩ.cm at 25 °C, which is the standard for ultrapure Type I water.
This standard of purity is required for analytical applications including PCR, electrophoresis, cell culture, and sequencing, where even a few parts per billion (ppb) of ionic impurities can adversely impact results.
Step 4: UV Photo‑Oxidation – Destroying Organics and Microbes
The Purite Fusion also features an optional second barrier of double wavelength UV photo‑oxidation for an even higher level of sensitive process protection:
- 185 nm UV: Oxidises and photo-decomposes organic materials to smaller, more biodegradable species.
- 254 nm UV: Inactivates microorganisms by attacking nucleic acids and prohibiting reproduction.
In combination, these two wavelengths can achieve a TOC level <5 ppb. The resulting super pure water can be used for HPLC, preparation of cell culture media and TOC‑sensitive analytics.
Step 5: Ultrafilter – The Molecular Safety Net
UV treatment, even at high intensity, does not remove biological risks. Purite Fusion features an ultrafilter with a molecular weight cut-off of 5,000 Dalton that removes particulates, endotoxins, and nucleases (RNases and DNases).
Why is that important? Trace amounts of endotoxins trigger immune responses when exposed to cell lines and alter molecular assay outcomes. RNases and DNases, as the names imply, will cut nucleic acids, which can cause problems in experiments. The ultrafilter produces pure water suitable for highly sensitive molecular applications like IVF by eliminating problematic substances.
Step 6: Final UV LED Disinfection – Protection at the Point of Use
The final component in the Purite Fusion system is a point-of-use UV LED. This inhibits any microbial growth in the dispensing pathway and prevents the chance of microbial contamination from storage or handling.
The system is designed to provide multiple dispensing modes including manual (for fast filling), volumetric (for precise dispensing) and latched (for continuous flow dispensing). Optional remote dispensing pods can be added for added convenience in multi-bench lab set ups allowing researchers to fill vessels from their bench space without having to physically move the vessel to the main unit.
More Than Purity: Efficiency and Smart Features
Water purity is critically important, but the Purite Fusion is designed with operational efficiency in mind as well:
- Eco Recovery Mode: Up to 50% more water recovery means less waste and lower operating costs.
- Wi‑Fi Monitoring: Monitor performance, event logging and diagnostic data remotely. Lab managers can also identify usage trends and anticipate maintenance needs.
- USB Logging: Quickly download data to a USB device for easy access during compliance audits or troubleshooting.
- Compact Footprint: Benchtop or wall mount for the lab environment and external tanks available to accommodate diverse lab needs.
Built for the Future of Laboratory Water
The outcome of these interconnected stages is a purification platform that provides both flexibility and confidence. For standard reagent preparation, Type II water offers a cost-effective purity option. For sensitive molecular biology, IVF, or analytical applications, Type I ultrapure water delivers experimental reliability.
Integrating best-in-class treatment stages such as carbon pre‑filtration, RO, deionisation, UV photo‑oxidation, ultrafiltration and point-of-use UV LED, Purite Fusion addresses all the major risk factors of laboratory water. The outcome is a system that is not just designed to produce high-quality water, but to protect it at every stage all the way to your vessel.
