Water purification solutions for renal dialysis
Around the world, the number of people with chronic kidney disease is increasing steadily, putting growing pressure on renal and haemodialysis facilities. In the UK, more than 26,000 patients need renal dialysis treatment at any one time – at a main hospital, a satellite unit, a walk-in centre, or at home.
Purite designs, builds and installs dialysis water treatment systems for NHS Trusts and private healthcare providers across the UK. Whatever the scale of your unit, we provide a dialysis water treatment system engineered around your exact clinical and operational requirements – from a single point of use to a fully redundant centralised installation.
Centralised renal water purification
Our centralised dialysis water treatment systems are custom engineered to meet the exact needs of your renal dialysis team. We work with you to define the optimum specification – water source quality, number of dialysis points, pressure and flow rates, redundancy, and future expansion.
At the core of every system is water treatment for dialysis built on reverse osmosis: pressurised feedwater is passed through a semi-permeable membrane, producing high-purity permeate that meets the strict water quality standards dialysis treatment demands.
High water recovery – low operating costs
We use a range of technologies to deliver the best results for every customer. At the heart of our RO dialysis water treatment systems are advanced, highly efficient double-pass hot RO membranes, configured in parallel for full redundancy.
RO water for dialysis must be consistently pure and consistently available – our demand-based control system delivers recovery rates as high as 90%, with membranes at least 50%more efficient than competing units. For a renal department with 12 points of use, that typically saves around £8,000 a year on water costs alone.
A dialysis water treatment system purifies mains water to the strict quality standard required for haemodialysis, removing minerals, organic compounds and bacteria that could otherwise enter a patient’s bloodstream during treatment. Purite’s systems use reverse osmosis as the core purification stage, backed by automatic heat sanitisation to keep the whole distribution loop free of biofilm.
RO water in dialysis is used to prepare the dialysate – the fluid that helps remove waste products from a patient’s blood – and to rinse and disinfect dialysis machines between treatments. Because patients are exposed to far larger volumes of water than in normal drinking use, RO water for dialysis must meet a far higher purity standard than tap water.
An RO unit is one component. A complete RO dialysis water treatment system typically also includes pre-treatment (softening and carbon filtration), storage and distribution loops, heat sanitation, and continuous monitoring – engineered as a single package around the number of dialysis points it needs to serve.
Case study: Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
Advanced water purification technology from Purite Water Purification Solutions is playing a critical role in protecting the health and wellbeing of renal patients at Sunderland Royal Hospital and Durham Treatment Centre, both part of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
In each case, Purite technology is allowing the Trust to meet increased demand for its critical patient care services.
An RO system operates by passing pressurised feedwater through a specialised semi-permeable membrane, which is capable of rejecting up to 98% of the mineral salts, silica and organic compounds and over 99% of bacteria that may be present, and produces a stream of purified water known as the permeate.
